In light of Earth Day coming up at the end of this month, I thought it appropriate to write about some eco-friendly ways to maintain your home. Not only will you know you’re doing your part to preserve Mother Earth AND likely save money along the way, but all of the items listed below will also appeal to most home buyers today!Â
1. HOT or COLD? As we continue to experience higher temperatures than in the past, many have opted to install programmable smart thermostats, such as Nest or other similar products. Not only can you program them yourself, but you can control them from your smartphone in the event you forgot to turn on/off the heat or A/C after you leave home. Insulating the attic and crawlspace, as well as the walls, will also cut down on energy consumption.Â
2. A BARREL OF FUN! Install water capturing systems such as rain barrels to save rainwater that you can later use to water your yard. There are professionals you could hire or spend the weekend on a DIY project and install yourself, if you are feeling handy!Â
3. LET THERE BE LIGHT: Swap regular light bulbs for LED bulbs- Investing in the right energy-efficient light bulbs makes a huge difference. You will not only use less electricity, but you will also make your home more environmentally-friendly. No matter how tempting incandescent bulbs are, LED bulbs are the better alternative. They last longer, are eco-friendly, and they help you save money in the long run.Â
4. FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD! Plant a vegetable garden and/or fruit tress in your yard. Be sure to plant only foods that will be consumed. Not only will you save on your grocery bill, but your food is guaranteed to taste better when home grown. Take it a step further and start a compost bin, too!
These are only a few suggestions of how you can be environmetally friend while upgrading your home. Be sure to attend Kensington’s first EARTH DAY next to the Library on Adams Ave. April 23rd from 11am – 2pm to meet other like-minded folks, share in ideas and gather information about how we can all work together in a mindful, earth-friendly way!Â
